Helwan Cement signs a collaboration agreement with Helwan University to empower women’s labor participation in Egypt’s society
8 July 2021, Cairo - Helwan Cement, a subsidiary of the Suez Cement group of companies today signed a collaboration agreement with Helwan University for a joint project aims at empowering women especially young ones in Kafr El Elw district and surrounding areas through new skill sets that will enable them to participate economically and socially in their communities.
The project will establish a training facility in Kafr El Elw Club to give sewing, tailoring, and accessory production training sessions to around 150 women per year, allowing them to develop skills that will enable them to join an existing business or start their own at the end of the programme.
“Suez Cement group of companies is eager to assume its role in shaping the future of Egyptian society and the local communities in which it operates,” Jose Maria, Chief Executive Officer of the Suez Cement group of companies stated during the signing ceremony.
"We pay special attention to projects of capacity building and entrepreneurship, to educate and train. This will help in creating job opportunities and raising the standard of living of the citizens of the local communities," Jose Maria added.
The President of Helwan University, Dr. Maged Negm, stated during the signing ceremony that the university is keen to hold agreements aiming at social service, ensuring individual engagement in the public life, and achieving sustainable development requirements in all aspects of life. The project seeks to highlight the importance of social engagement in developing local communities to solve society issues and meet all needs of such communities. This would gradually contribute to encouraging youth and residents to effectively take part in developing their communities.
“The university is implementing well-organized strategies based on collaboration with private sector entities and civil society organizations as well as designing programs for the benefit of citizens in the local community, especially women,” Negm added.
The project objectives align with Egypt’s 2030 Sustainable Agenda that encourages women’s labor participation, expanding the female share of the labor force and creating job opportunities to absorb these additional women laborers.
