Suez Cement presents best practices to address gender issues

Suez Cement Group of Companies (SCGC) presented a good example of the best practices to address the gender issues. This came through the participation made by member of the union committee in SCGC Head Office and coordinator of the international activity of women in the General Union of Wood & Construction Sherine El-Gharably.

In her speech on the sidelines of the workshop of (gender in building and construction) hosted by the Rwandan capital of Kigali last week, which aimed at exchange of expertise of male and female participants in order to enhance understanding of the gender issues and presenting the best practices in dealing with gender in the building and construction sector from different countries, El-Gharably said that SCGC has presented a role model in standing in face of challenges of integration of gender in the sector, specifically the increase of women participation.

El-Gharably stressed the Group’s commitment and keenness on empowering women, creating a labor environment that ensures equal opportunities and protecting women against use of violence in the labor or persecution in all forms through adopting strict rules and policies to be firmly applied on all job and administrative levels. She also praised the programs adopted by the Group’s HR Department where she experienced these programs through her work as a human resources supervisor in the employment planning department, particularly the program of “new stars” which was implemented carefully and professionally where one of its important achievements is the integration of more women in the sector and in the jobs which remained monopolized by men for long periods. For his part, SCGC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jose Maria said he is very happy for the success achieved by the Group in presenting a leading and distinguished example in the field of addressing the gender issues in the building and construction sector while removing all barriers that hinder women’s increased participation in the industry.

SCGC Human Resources Director Sherry Bishara said she is very proud and pleased with the success achieved by the Group in developing strategies that will enhance participation of women and face the challenges that hinder integration of women in the labor market and the use of their unlimited capabilities in all sectors, especially the building and construction one.
It is noteworthy that the workshop has been organized in collaboration between the Federation of Netherlands Trade Unions and the International Union of Wood & Construction in North Africa to support seven member syndicates in the federation in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia.
