EC Ambassador visits El Minya White Cement plant
29 June 2009. Yesterday, H.E. Dr. Klaus Ebermann, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Egypt paid a visit to El-Minya cement plant, one of Suez Cement’s five production facilities operating in Egypt.
During his visit, H.E. Dr. Ebermann had a tour of the plant, accompanied by the plant manager Eng. Mohamed Fathi, and got introduced of the Company Sustainable Development’s strategy, the social initiatives promoted by the Company to support Samalout community as well as the Company’s Safety and Environment programs.
The main purpose of his visit was to learn more about the Company’s CSR activities and bring closer the efforts done by Suez Cement group and the European Commission in promoting socio-economic development.
“It has been my pleasure and privilege to get a briefing on Corporate Social Responsibility here at the Minya branch, today. There is much common ground with the European Union programs and our respective priorities on sustainability, environmental concerns and workplace security are very close” said Ambassador Ebermann after the plant visit.
The Ambassador acknowledged El Minya Cement Plant as a key player for the development of Samalut area and he complimented the plant on its success in implementing the safety program called “Zero Accidents” as as well as promoting many development projects in partnership with local institutions, NGOs and UN agencies to support the local community.
“CSR is part of our core business strategy and our view holds that to sustain our business, the economic activities must ultimately serve the interests of society. Over the course of the past three years, the El Minya plant team has exerted a lot of efforts to improve its performance in terms of safety, environment and social responsibility. We are strongly committed to being a responsible corporate citizen. In this regard, in line with the Government’s efforts to increase the literacy rate and improve the quality of education by 2015, this year we provided 3,757 children with food assistance in the form of a daily breakfast snack and take-home rations of rice, to encourage their families to send them to the school” stated Eng. Mohamed Fathi.
Moreover, the Company has also offered two scholarships, amounting of 40,000 Euro, to the best young graduated engineers of El Minya University to attend the one-year Master Fratelli Pesenti in Civil Engineering organized by the University Polithecnic of Milan.
El Minya plant was established in 1991. The plant is specialized in the production of the white cement, CEM II/B-L 42.5 N, and it is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified.
