More than 2,000 people at the first Helwan Cement Open Door
Our way for an effective dialogue with the local community
17 December 2008. Today, more than 2,000 residents from Kafr El Elw district (Helwan Governorate) had the opportunity to visit Helwan Cement plant, one of the five plants belonging to Suez Cement group of Companies.
With the aim of improving communication and establishing a more fruitful and transparent dialogue with the local community groups and local authorities, for the first time Helwan Cement plant opened the doors of its industrial facilities to the public. Therefore, this event was the occasion for the plant to promote better understanding of its business as well as its environmental and social initiatives.
"I am proud of the results of this successful event as this “Open-door” initiative provided for the first time our stakeholders with the opportunity to discover how cement is made and compare their expectations with the positive actions that the Company has undertaken to safeguard the environment and the health and safety of its workers and neighbours." stated Mr. Ahmed El Sawy, plant manager of Helwan Cement Company.
The visitors, including inhabitants of Kafr El Elw, families of Helwan Cement’s employees, representatives of the local authorities and civil society were welcomed inside the festive and colored plant by the engineers of the plant who explained them the history of the Company, the cement manufacturing process and its basic components and stressed on the importance to work in full compliance with the safety and environmental rules. A special and very attractive animation corner was designed for the young visitors who were entertained with a particular festive program including a band music, face painting, balloon sculpture, pop-corn machines and games.
“I am really impressed by the many significant activities implemented by the plant to improve its environmental impact. Moreover, as partner in the implementation of the development project “For the Smile of our Children” promoted by Helwan Cement Company in cooperation with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, I would like to thank the Company for having demonstrated an effective and strong commitment to improve the living conditions of Kafr El Elw inhabitants” said Mr. Ahmed Ewiss, chairman of the NGO called “Sons of Giza” which operates in Kafr El Elw area.
