Automation Manager

Job Purpose
Control the accurate execution of the automation maintenance activities by optimizing its execution and providing all the necessary support to the automation department to support the efficient and cost-effective operation of the plant

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the operational viability of the plant with respect to proper function of all instrumentation equipment and associated devices.  
  • Participate in the implementation of investment projects by providing input into the design and implementation of automation engineering projects to ensure the tasks to be accomplished in a quality, cost-effective, and timely manner to meet specific plant needs.
  • Provide technical assistance for electricians in the installation of electrical and control equipment and troubleshooting of electrical and control problems to enable continuous plant operability.
  • Schedule, assign, plan and monitor the work of electrical/instrument shop personnel performing a variety of instrument projects to ensure completion of the tasks in a timely and quality manner.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance Planner by communicating anticipated jobs and provides input when stores stocks need to be increased or altered, for upcoming jobs to maintain maintenance schedules
  • Develop work schedules, equipment usage schedules, priority of instrumentation expenditures and procedures for equipment and appliance maintenance with the Maintenance Planner to meet overall plant costs
  • Prepare material and labour estimates to develop project cost estimates and plant budgets.
  • Monitor the acquisition and use of materials to meet productivity and budgetary goals.
  • Maintain time, work order, material, equipment and other electrical shop records and submits reports to plant management to contribute to the continual evaluation of operational efficiency and costs.
  • Train or inform employees of new work methods or procedures, changes in safety regulations, work policies and electrical codes and standards to maximize the staff’s skills and ensure compliance with Company & regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure budgeting guidelines are met by prioritizing shop expenditures to stay within budget and assists in preparation of capital and operations budgets
  • Interpret department policies to assigned personnel and enforces safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards
  • Inspect new construction and assists engineers in design requirements prior to construction to ensure compliance.
  • Keep detailed up to date records of instrument specifications to enable the accurate planning and completion of work.
  • Ensure that proper installation procedures for all instrumentation are followed including SCGC/ HTC standards at a minimum for consistency, safety and compliance.
  • Participate in the resolution of grievances to the levels provided for by the Collective Agreement to maintain optimal working relationships and preserve the parameters of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Provide ongoing electrical/instrumentation support to the plant for all shifts by participating in the plant’s on call program which includes evaluating and determining the course of action for instrumentation incidents after hours and on weekends while on call and may require on-site supervision of the resolution to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Ensure the application of the plant’s rules of conduct and health & safety protocols during maintenance procedures to minimize injuries and lost time incidents by participating in weekly safety meetings and providing feedback on unsafe working conditions or signs of equipment breakdowns.  
  • Ensure that Instrumentation department tools and equipment are in good working condition and that adequate stocks of consumables are maintained to allow maintenance activities to occur as scheduled.
  • Support, direct and implement the overall SCGC Electrical, Instrument and Process Control Concepts for all plant projects in support of plant objectives.
  • Collaborate with the MCC to analyse the SAP-PM notification to decide the priority and the requested resources.
  • Participate or lead ad-hoc projects that may go beyond formal accountabilities to satisfy and respond accordingly to business needs      
  • Proactively manage Health & Safety process and procedures to achieve the company ambition of ‘0 Lost Time Injuries’ and to continuously improve the company's Health & Safety performance
  • Ensure compliance requirements are met through organizational and procedural measures including implementation of Group guidelines, performing trainings, monitoring compliance etc.
     

Job Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or any equivalent

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in field of electrical or project management
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in heavy industry

Technical Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of maintenance management methods of predictive inspection tools (SAP & AutoCAD)
  • Fluent with NEC, NFPA, ISA, etc.
  • Experience in conducting studies including EVA, IRP, NPV
  • Very good knowledge of cement products and cement production processes
  • Knowledge of safety laws and regulation
  • Familiar with PLC/DCS and HMI architecture, in particular, ABB 800xA software and hardware.
  • Proficient in MS Office, Google software
